The Amazing Story of How Softball Was Invented
Softball is played by millions of athletes around the world, yet very few people know its remarkable origin story. Unlike many sports that were carefully planned and organized, softball was created completely by accident during a Thanksgiving celebration in Chicago. What began with a boxing glove, a broomstick, and a little imagination has grown into one of America’s most beloved sports and an important part of youth athletics at organizations like Macon RBI.
Sometimes history is written through years of planning. Other times, it begins with one creative idea and someone willing to say, “Play ball.”
Baseball Came First
Before softball ever existed, baseball had already captured America’s imagination.
Modern baseball began taking shape during the mid 1800s as clubs worked to establish common rules for the game. In 1845, Alexander Cartwright and the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club helped create many of the rules that still influence baseball today. One year later, one of the first officially recorded games was played in Hoboken, New Jersey.
As the decades passed, baseball spread rapidly across the country. Communities gathered around local teams, children learned the fundamentals in neighborhood fields, and the game became deeply woven into American culture.
But no one could have imagined that another sport was about to be born from one unforgettable afternoon.
A Thanksgiving Day Surprise
On Thanksgiving Day in 1887, Yale and Harvard alumni gathered inside Chicago’s Farragut Boat Club to hear the outcome of the annual football game between their schools.
When Yale’s victory was announced, excitement filled the room.
One fan tossed a boxing glove toward a Harvard supporter.
Instead of avoiding it, someone grabbed a nearby broomstick and swung.
Watching the laughter unfold, reporter George Hancock saw an opportunity.
He shouted, “Play ball!”
Within minutes, Hancock tied the boxing glove into the shape of a ball, used the broomstick as a bat, drew a baseball diamond on the clubhouse floor with chalk, and quickly created a simple set of rules.
Without realizing it, everyone in the room had just participated in the very first game of softball.

It Wasn’t Always Called Softball
The new game quickly became popular, but for many years it went by several different names.
Some communities called it Indoor Baseball.
Others knew it as Kitten Ball, Diamond Ball, Playground Ball, or Mush Ball.
As the game spread across the country, different regions developed slightly different rules and equipment.
It wasn’t until 1926 that the name “softball” became widely accepted.
Ironically, today’s softball certainly isn’t soft.
How the Game Continued to Grow
Originally created as an indoor activity during Chicago’s cold winters, softball eventually moved outdoors and developed into its own unique sport.
Although baseball and softball share many similarities, softball created its own identity with several distinctive features.
Players use a larger ball.
Pitchers throw underhand.
Base paths are shorter.
Games typically last seven innings.
These differences create a fast-paced game that rewards quick reactions, teamwork, communication, and athleticism.
More Than a Game
The remarkable history of softball reminds us that the sport has always been about bringing people together.
Long before championship tournaments and college scholarships, softball simply gave friends an opportunity to compete, laugh, and enjoy one another’s company.
That same spirit continues today.

Today, softball is played throughout schools, recreation leagues, colleges, and international competitions across the globe.
